Swedish Social Democratic Leader Ends Government Formation Bid

(MENAFN) Swedish Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson announced Monday that she was withdrawing from efforts to establish a new government, citing insufficient parliamentary backing to move forward, according to reports from public broadcaster.

Andersson had been given 10 days earlier by parliament’s speaker to assess whether she could secure the necessary support to form an administration. However, she decided to abandon the initiative after the Left Party declared its intention to back the Moderate Party’s candidate in the parliamentary speaker election.

“I can state that there is currently no possibility for me to form a government,” Andersson said.

She described the latest political development as a “new constellation in parliament,” bringing together the Left Party and the Moderates.

Andersson also referred to Sweden’s parliamentary convention, under which the largest party within a governing coalition typically receives the speaker position. On that basis, she argued that the political grouping that took shape during the speaker election should now attempt to negotiate an agreement to form the next government.

When questioned about whether she was ending her pursuit of the premiership, Andersson reiterated that the current political circumstances did not allow her to continue.

“How things develop in the coming weeks remains to be seen,” she added.

Her withdrawal places the next steps in Sweden’s government-formation process with the speaker of parliament.
