“It is obvious that the US is increasingly acting in a way that is damaging to trust and that contradicts Europe’s values of global cooperation and international law,” she said while presenting Sweden’s annual foreign policy declaration in parliament, according to reports.
Despite her criticism, Stenergard emphasized that the US remains a vital partner for Swedish and European security and prosperity.
She reaffirmed Sweden’s stance on territorial integrity, stating the country would "never compromise on the territorial integrity of its neighbors" and stressing that only Denmark and Greenland should determine matters concerning their lands.
She also dismissed the idea of placing nuclear weapons on Swedish soil before wartime, reinforcing the nation’s long-standing tradition of opposing peacetime deployment of nuclear arms, a policy shared by other Nordic countries.
Her remarks come amid a broader national discussion on defense and security policy ahead of Sweden’s parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2026.
Stenergard expressed confidence that the US would uphold its commitments under NATO’s Article Five in the event of a military attack, saying: “There is no doubt about it.”
